Data Science Competition in October. Winner gets 1000 USD.
Introduction, How to participate, Reward Prizes
No need for a Table of Contents for this, pretty short read.
Introduction
We all know one of the best ways to learn data science is to actually do the work yourself:
Load up the data on your own
Find and clean out all the outliers
Deal with any biases present within the data
Set up either an expanding window/rolling window if dealing with time series analysis
See if you can find any related macro data online for free, and merge that into your current data
Read other people’s research about this subject
Cross Validation for Parameter Tuning (Underfit vs Overfit)
So, to spice things up a bit, I will run a simple data science competition for the month of October.
Winner will get 1000 USD for it. Please make sure you have a PayPal account so you can actually receive the money. Make sure you do the KYC as well for it.
More details to come on this after the Sept 25th resume review.
How to Participate
1.) To be eligible to Participate: all you need to do is be a paid subscriber. If you’re not, then you can’t participate in this. This is supposed to be a fun activity that actually makes you read the materials covered in the substack, so that you actually have something on your resume in the projects section (if you don’t have experience), and if you are still in university, I remember how much $1000 mattered to me, so here’s something to help you with your credits.
Also, I’m not going to allow some random jackass on the internet to show up, and try to take the winnings, nope. This is for the loyal readers only. Just make sure you are a paid subscriber on Oct 1, 2022 and on Oct 31, 2022, as that would be official start & end dates for the contest.
FYI: If you don’t have too much experience, you can link your code to your Github account, and link this contest, and if you had good performance, your resume will quickly move to the top of the stack. You’ve already demonstrated your capabilities to your future manager without even saying a word.
2.) What you Need to Submit: To make sure this actually helps you benefit in your presentation skills (you will do that with CEOs and CFOs a lot), I’m going to make sure your code is also in a presentable format. If you just chuck a simple .R, or a .py file and call it a day, that will not count.
You will need to put your code in a simple presentable format that explains the logic used, the code, and the analysis done. Here’s an example to take a look at: Kaggle House Price Prediction Regression
Here are some examples of acceptable formats: R Markdown File, or a Jupyter Notebook File. If you don’t know how to make them, click here.
3.) A Kaggle Account: Kaggle is a great place to grab a dataset real quick, and then submit your finalized predictions. You will need a Kaggle account to grab the data, submit your predictions, and then a quick photo proof that you own the account in question.
4.) PayPal Account with KYC: I can’t pay you the proceeds if you don’t have a PayPal KYC’ed account that can receive money transfers.
Reward Prizes
Here are the reward prizes for those that choose to participate.
1st Place: 1,000 USD
2nd Place: 100 USD
3rd Place: 50 USD
More details to follow on the official start date of: Oct 1, 2022.
